Job Summary:
- Perform routine and specialized diagnostic procedures requiring technical skill, judgment, and independent decision-making.
- Conduct phlebotomy and accessioning duties as needed.
- Assist the Laboratory Supervisor with technical and administrative functions.
Responsibilities:
- Technical Procedures: Conduct testing, quality control, and proficiency testing to ensure accurate and timely results. Verify specimen integrity, prioritize tasks, evaluate and interpret data, and document actions. Assist with new method implementation, policy updates, and CAP inspections.
- Instrumentation: Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments. Perform preventive maintenance and quality control checks. Seek assistance when necessary.
- Information Handling: Use Cerner/STAR for test ordering, receiving, and result verification. Review pending lists, follow up on pending tests, and document actions appropriately. Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Communication/Customer Service: Communicate effectively with supervisors, pathologists, coworkers, and other departments. Provide assistance to physicians, nurses, and patients. Maintain professional rapport with peers and staff.
- Compliance/Safety: Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies, including safety regulations. Inform supervisors of safety issues, maintain a safe work environment, and complete mandatory education and continuing education programs. Support department performance improvement goals.
Work Demands/Environment:
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and stooping.
- May require lifting or moving items up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent use of hand dexterity and eye/hand coordination.
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, and biohazardous materials.
- Fast-paced, high-traffic environment with potential stressors.
- May require on-call duties, weekend, or holiday work.
